Motorola Inc., formerly one of the world’s leader in the field of integrated telecommunications and embedded electronic systems, was headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, U.S. On January 4, 2011 Motorola was split up into two separate companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solution.
It is difficult to separate the Motorola history from the history of mobile phones. Nonetheless before mobile phones emerged on the market the company has already been one of the first in a number of business lines.
In 1928 Paul Galvin and his younger brother Joseph founded the company named Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. At first the company was engaged in assembly of mains rectifier, which was done manually by a team of five employees. Then Paul Galvin vigorously switched to a new market of radio. In 1930 the company introduced the first car radio at a price of $110. In addition to low price the device was easy-to-use as there was not necessity to turn off the engine. To advertise a novelty Paul Galvin has even arranged it in his own car and has coined it the name of Motorola , which is derived from two words: “motor” and “Victrola” (the name of a popular phonograph in the time). After that the company began making portable radios.
Aiming at the expansion of the product range in 1936 the company produced special car radios for police which were tuned to only one frequency. Cooperation with government continued in the years of the Second World War when the company introduced a handheld, portable two-way radio transceiver Handie-talkie. Military orders contributed to increased profits up to $9,936,558.
In 1943 the first pocket short-range radio Walkie-Talkie was produced. Today all pocket radios are called «walkie-talkie».
In view of the popularity of all these devices in 1947 Galvin Manufacturing Corporation changed its name to Motorola Inc. World famous Motorola logo in the form of a letter «M» formed by two peaks appeared later in 1955.
In the early 1950s the company began to develop the production of semiconductors, which became one of the components of Motorola’s success in the years to come. Motorola equipment was becoming almost a standard. In 1956 a transistor radio was launched as well as the world’s first pager. In subsequent years Motorola has been developed in several directions.
But the most important event in the history of the company happened in 1973 when the world’s first working model of a cellular phone appeared, Motorola DynaTAC (DYNamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage). The first mobile phone call was made on April 3, 1973 by a Motorola engineer Martin Cooper. It was the effect of a revolution.
Ten years have elapsed till in 1984 the first Motorola DynaTAC went on sale. In several years the number of mobile phone users amounted to millions. Before the Motorola’s invention people were offered only car radio telephones weighing over 10kg and installed in the car trunk. Motorola DynaTAC weighed slightly more than 1 kg. For the company it was one of the most expensive projects. Its cost was $100 million and 10 years of research and developments.
Over the next ten years Motorola has been engaged in the perfection of mobile devices. In 1989 the company launched a cell phone with an innovative new «flip» design Motorola MicroTAC. In 1996 the first ever clamshell/flip mobile phone Motorola StarTAC was released. In 1998 Iridium — Motorola 9500 went on sale, the first wireless phone in the history to provide total global coverage. In 2004 Motorola RAZR V3 with its thin profile and amazing appearance, the success of which has never been surpassed.
