The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) turns on when the ignition is on
and the vehicle lights are tur ned off . As
the daylight fades, the illumination of the
dials likewise dims automa t ically and will
go out complet ely when the outside light
is very low. This feature is meant to remind
you t o switch on the headli ght swhen out-

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge (!) ¢ poge 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on.To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol-
lowing important points:
Engine cold
If only the LEDsat the bottom of the gauge
turn on, the engine has not reached operating
temperature yet. Avoid hig h engine speeds,
heavy engine loads and heavy throttle applica-
tions .
Normal temperature
The engine has reached its operating temper-
at ure once the LEDsup to the center of the .,.

gauge turn on under normal driving condi-
tions . The LEDshigher up may turn on when
the engine is under heavy load or the exter ior
temperature is high .This is no need to worry
as long as the . warning light in the instru-
ment cluster does not illuminate . If the LEDs
in the upper area of the display and the indica-
tor light . in the instrument cluster display
turn on, the coolant temperature is too high
¢page 15.
A WARNING
— Always observe the warning in
<!;>
page 216, Engine compartment, be-
fore opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
— Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself. Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
seeany steam or engine coolant.
(D Note
— Mount ing additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool-
ing effect of the radiator . At high outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
— The front spoiler has been designed to
properly distrib ute the cooling air when
the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and t he engine could then over-
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maximum
permiss ible engine RPMafter the break-in pe-
riod. Before reaching this area, move these-
lector lever to position «D (Drive)» or ease
your foot off the accelerator pedal.
@ Note
The tachometer needle should only briefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beginning of the red zone var-
ies depending on the engine.
@ Forthe sake of the environment
Upshifting early savesfuel and reduces en-
gine noise.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge only works when the ignition is
on. If the fue l level drops below 4 gallons (15
lite rs), the bottom LEDtu rns red and the indi-
cator light Illtu rns on ¢ page 20. The bot-
tom LED blinks red when the fue l level isvery
low.
The possible range based on the current fuel
level is shown in tab @ <!;>
page 23, fig. 4.
(D Note
Never run the ta nk complet ely dry. An ir-
regular supply of fuel can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter the exhaust
system. The cata lytic converter could then
overheat and be damaged.

Highway light function* (vehicles with LED
headlights) — this function adapts the lighting
for highway driving based on vehicle speed.
.&_WARNING
— Automatic headlights are only intended
to assist the driver . They do not relieve
the driver of his responsibility to check
the headlights and to turn them on man-
ually according to the current light and
visibility conditions . For example, fog
cannot be detected by the light sensors.
So always switch on the headlights §,0
under these weather conditions and
when driving in the dark.
— Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the headlights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back .
(D Note
The rear fog lights should only be turned
on in accordance with traffic regulation, as
the lights are bright for following traffic.
(D Tips
— In the event of a light sensor malfunc-
tion, the driver is notified in the instru-
ment cluster display q page 21 .

& WARNING
When lowering or raising the sunshade,
make sure there is nothing in its way and
t hat it has a free path to trave l. This could
cause personal injury.
{D)Tips
— If the sun shade is operated repeatedly
wit hin a short time, the built-in overload
protection circuit may be tr ipped. If this
occurs, you will have to wait briefly be-
fore you can operate the shade again.
— Because of the decrease in the flexibility
of the shade materia l at temperatures
below freezing, the electrica l circuit
which operates the shade shuts off when
the temperature in the vehicle falls be-
low 14 °F (- 10 °C).The shade cannot be
operated until the passenger compart-

(!) — Rain sensor mode. The windshield wipers
switch on once the vehicle speed exceeds ap-
proximately 2 mph (4 km/h) and it is raining.
The higher the rain sensor sensitivity is set
(switch @ to the right), the earlier the wind-
shield wipers react to moisture on the wind —
shield. You can deactivate rain sensor mode in
the MMI, which will then activate intermittent
mode. Select: ICARI
function button> Car sys-
tems control button > Driver assist > Rain
sensor > Off. In intermittent mode, you can
adjust the interval time using the switch @ .
@ -Slow wiping
® -Fast wiping
@ — Single wipe. If you hold the lever in this
position longer, the wipers switch from slow
wiping to fast wiping.
® — Clean the windshield. The wipers wipe
one time after several seconds of driving to
remove water droplets. You can switch this
function off by moving the lever to position ®
within 10 seconds after the afterwipe .The af-
terwipe function is reactivated the next time
you switch the ignition on.
Cleaning the headlights. The headlight wash-
er system* only functions when the lights are
switched on. The headlights and the night vi-
sion system camera* are cleaned automatical-
ly the first time the lever is press in position
® and every 8 times it is pressed after that.
They are also cleaned every time you hold the
lever in position ® for longer than 8 seconds.
A WARNING
— The rain sensor is only designed to assist
and support the driver. It remains entire-
ly the driver’s responsibility to monitor
outside weather conditions and to man-
ually activate the wipers as soon as rain
or drizzle reduces visibility through the
windshield .
— The windshield must not be treated with
water-repellent materials . They can in-
crease glare under poor visibility condi-
tions such as wetness, darkness, or when
the sun is low on the horizon. In addi-
Clear vision 49
tion, they can cause the windshield wip-
ers to chatter.
— Properly functioning windshield wiper
blades are required for a clear view and
safe driving c:::>
page SO, Replacing
windshield wiper blades.
([) Note
— In the caseof frost, check whether the
windshield wiper blades are frozen to
the windshield. Switching on the wind-
shield wipers can damage the wiper
blades!
— Prior to using a car wash, the windshield
wiper system must be switched off (lever
in position 0). This helps to prevent unin-
tentional switching on and damage to
the windshield wiper system.
— Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted
window. Using the wipers as a conven-
ient ice scraper will destroy the wiper
blades.
(D Tips
— The windshield wipers are switched off
when the ignition is off. Activate the
windshield wipers after the ignition is
switched back on by moving the wind-
shield wiper lever to any position.
— Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades
result in streaking. This can affect the
rain sensor function . Checkyour wind-
shield wiper blades regularly .
— The washer fluid nozzles of the wind —
shield washer system are heated at low
temperatures when the ignition is on.
— When stopping temporarily, e.g. at a
traffic light, the set speed of the wind-
shield wipers is automatically reduced by
one speed.

be folded away when in the service posi-
tion! Otherwise, you risk damaging the
paint on the hood or the windshie ld wip-
er motor.
— You should not move your vehicle or
press the windsh ield wiper lever when
t he wipe r arms are folded away from the
windshield. The windshield wipers would
move back into their original position
and could damage the hood and wind-
shield.

tem, always loosen blades wh ich are fro-
zen to the windshield before operating
wipers.
— To help prevent damage to wiper blades,
do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint
thinne r, or other solvents on or near the
wiper blades.
— To help prevent damage to the wiper
arms or other components, do not at-
tempt to move the wipe rs by hand.
(j) Tips
— Commercial hot waxes appl ied by auto-
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of t he windshie ld.
— You can also use the service position, for
example, if you want to protect the
windshield from icing by using a cover.
— You cannot activate the service position
when the hood is open.
