Await Further Instructions is a 2018 British science fiction horror film directed by Johnny Kevorkian. The film follows a dysfunctional family who winds up entrapped in their house on Christmas by a mysterious black membrane and begins receiving cryptic instructions from their television.[1][2]
Plot[edit]
The film centers upon a family who have gathered for Christmas. The family is made up of Nick, his girlfriend Annji, Nick’s pregnant sister Kate, Kate’s husband Scott, Grandad, and Nick’s parents Tony and Beth. The gathering is initially fine but grows tense after Kate makes racist remarks to Annji. They quickly find that they are surrounded by a strange black substance and that they cannot flee the home. They receive messages warning them that their food is contaminated and instructing them to cleanse themselves with bleach, as well as take a vaccine dropped down their chimney. Tony forces the family to take the vaccines despite Annji’s reservations, as the syringes look used. Grandad dies while vomiting black liquid.
The television later informs the family that one of their number is infected. Tony, Beth, Kate, and Scott believe it to be Annji, so they lock her in an upstairs bedroom with the dead body of Grandad. Nick unplugs the television, but is warned against this once it’s plugged back in by Tony. Kate urges Scott to attack Nick, only for her to become injured in the process. A desperate Nick tries to secretly find a way to flee the home, only for the television to reveal this to the others. By attaching a phone to a long stick with which to probe the space where the toilet waste pipe leaves the house, Nick has obtained film of some snakelike entity attacking the phone. Tony and Scott rush in, knock Nick unconscious, and drag him downstairs. The television then tells them that Nick is a sleeper agent and that they must get information from him. Tony refuses to look at the phone footage and tortures Nick until Beth interrupts them to let them know that Kate has died.
The surviving family members are told to return to the first floor as the television is activating quarantine. Nick is able to get Annji downstairs, but is unable to save his mother, who dies after exposure to black smoke. Nick and Annji rush downstairs and find the TV displaying a bright light, and Nick unplugs the TV. The light stays on the TV, however, and the house begins shaking. The TV proclaims that it is being resurrected just before Nick passes out. Nick awakens to find that he and Annji have been restrained and that the television wants Scott and Tony to sacrifice them. Tony attempts to sacrifice Annji, but Nick and Scott attack him, and Tony murders Scott with an axe. A fight between Tony and Nick ends when Nick throws the TV onto Tony, killing him. The TV rights itself and wire-like tendrils snake out of the TV and enter Tony via the back of his head and take control of his body. They soon realize that the black substance is composed entirely of the living wires. Nick confronts the wires, and throws the axe into the «heart» inside the TV. The tendrils seemingly die, but soon begin moving and engulf them. Tony, being controlled by the wires, murders them with the axe. The tendrils digest Kate’s body, leaving only her skeletal remains and her still-living baby amidst them. Tony brings in another TV, which greets the baby as «Ruby» and displays colorful patterns to get her attention. By this point, it turns out that television media itself has gained sapience and wants humanity to worship it as a god.

Filming for Await Further Instructions took place in Yorkshire, England. Johnny Kevorkian adapted a script written by Gavin Williams; Kevorkian stated that he chose the movie as his second feature film outing as «it was so different to the usual stuff that comes across my desk.» Williams began writing the script after listening to a track on the album Boxer by The National, «Apartment Story», stating that there was a lyric about «‘Stay indoors until somebody finds you. Do whatever the TV tells you’ and my little writer brain lit up with a spark.»[3]

Critical response[edit]
Await Further Instructions received a 81% on Rotten Tomatoes from 21 reviews.[5] The film was labeled a NYT Critics Pick by the New York Times.[2] It also received reviews from RogerEbert.com and The Guardian.[6][7] Matt Donato reviewed it for Dread Central, stating that it «launches into survivalist psychotics that embrace walled-in escalation, always building towards “that» finale. The ride is filled with highs and lows, but damn if Johnny Kevorkian doesn’t stick that landing.»[8]

Await Further Instructions: Well that was, interesting!?
This film immediately got my attention, it seemed to fall under a sub category that I love and I was gripped. Sadly it didn’t deliver the way that I expected and that’s a real shame.
You see Await Further Instructions tells the story of a family brought together for Christmas. When drama occurs two of them decide to leave at the crack of dawn but find themselves locked in. Every door and window is sealed by some kind of metal and now the television is giving them instructions! So what is going on? Terrorism? Quarantine? Or something more nefarious?
I liked this, I liked the family dynamic and how they each reacted. Some rationally, others counter productive. The movie also touches upon religion, how they badly «Reached» to deem what was taking place as relevant to their particular faith causing further irrational behavior and hysteria.
Starring GoT/Harry Potter/The Strain star David Bradley I was thoroughly hooked by the movie and fascinated to see where it would go next. Trouble is, where it goes isn’t as entertaining.
A slow burner, the pace works and kept me engaged but as soon as certain revelations take place and questions get answered you realize just how badly the writer has dropped the ball. They took a really enjoyable movie with a great concept and tagged on the end a moronic, awful finale that looks terrible and simply isn’t very good at all.
Personally based on everything we found out I’d like to see a sequel to this, but one where they give more thought to the ending.

Связи с внешним миром нет, ни телефонная линия, ни интернет не работают. А на экране ТВ высвечивается надпись «Оставайтесь дома и ожидайте дальнейших инструкций». Что случилось? Ядерная война? Эпидемия? Нападение пришельцев? Эксперимент правительства? Или…

На деле хоть фильм камерный и малобюджетный, он получился крепко сколоченным, с интригующим сюжетом и впечатляющей концовкой. И даже крылатым высказыванием от отца семейства «Будь лучшим в свой худший день». Последние 10 минут тентаклей, черного дыма и младенца, к которому тентакли обращаются с умоляющей просьбой ПОКЛОНИСЬ МНЕ! вообще великолепны.
Ну и конечно здесь поднимаются серьезные вопросы: нужно ли верить всему, что говорят по ТВ, например. Есть наблюдения о разнице поколений: так, отец свято верит ТВ, а под конец сравнивает телевидение с Христом (без шуток). В то же время молодежь предпочитает буквально умереть, чем жить с промытыми мозгами. Ну и мораль: нечего приезжать к семье на праздники. Шучу. Она в другом. Хотя, не исключаю, что и в этом.

Скандальная британская семья все же вызывала некоторое недоумение своим желанием ни за что ни про что убивать и калечить друг друга, притом что они даже не распивали спиртные напитки (вроде бы). Также концовка могла быть чуть-чуть поинтересней, чем притча о том, что пора выключить ТВ с передачами Малахова и пойти прогуляться. С другой стороны, все это подано динамично и захватывающе, так что придираться не хочется.

Схожий сюжет был в фильме для ТВ Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense Child’s Play 1984. Там семья тоже застревала в ужасном доме без возможности выбраться… и концовка тоже была мрачной. Хотя совершенно в ином духе, чем в “Ожидайте дальнейших инструкций”.
Фильм собрал в прокате 3800 долларов, правда, добрал кассу за счет показов на Нетфликс. Этот фильм. Нетфликс. О, ирония!
Вердикт фильму ужасов “Ожидайте дальнейших инструкций” 2018: 8 из 10. Да, простенько, в некоторых аспектах даже банальненько, но неплохо. Можно посмотреть. Вместо Малахова с его душераздирающими передачами про чьи-то грязные трусы, в том числе.

“Await Further Instructions” (Ожидайте дальнейших инструкций) (2018). Ник Милгрэм приезжает на рождество к родителям впервые за три года, и то, лишь поддавшись уговорам своей девушки, работнице «скорой помощи» Энджайи. Бет, мать Ника, встречает сына с распростертыми объятиями, но сразу становится понятно, что праздника ждать не стоит. Остальные на своей волне и настроены все как один довольно агрессивно. Взять хотя бы деда, вечно сидящего в кресле перед телевизором, и проклинающего всех, кого только можно. Сначала попадает арабам, потом – родному правительству, следом – мигрантам (горячий привет девушке Ника, чьи родители родом из Индии), а в конце концов достается и родным: «Ты клерк, а сын твой – женоподобная бестолочь», — говорит старик, обращаясь к Тони, который действительно всю свою жизнь проработал в офисе обыкновенным менеджером. Остальные – это сестра Ника, Кейт, беременная от Скотта. А вот и сам Скотт, тупоголовый качок-мачо, тоже не чуждый расистских идей. Праздник оборачивается кошмаром, милые разговоры – ссорой, и вот уже Ник с Энджайей собираются, психанув, прыгнуть в машину и вернуться домой. Но эта идея обречена на провал. Выйти из дома теперь невозможно. Войти, впрочем, тоже. Открывается дверь, открывается окно – и что же там? Сплошная решетка из металла. Черная как смоль. Разбить ее молотком? Ха. Проще сломать молоток. На экране телевизора появляется одно-единственное сообщение: «Не выходите из дома. Ожидайте дальнейших инструкций». Тони уверяет всех, что беспокоиться не надо – это очередной ход властей, и видимо, за окнами дома, которых теперь нет, происходит что-то страшное. Возможно эпидемия. Следует успокоиться и ждать следующих сообщений.

Удивительный британский фильм, который умудряется балансировать между ужасами а-ля Кроненберг, социальной сатирой, body-хоррором, жестокой пародией на реалити-шоу, конспирологией и семейной драмой. Сообщения на экране телевизора в гостиной периодически меняются. А кому еще верить, как не ему? Эта чертова плазма не может врать. И уж тем более не будут врать власти – потому что если не они транслируют указания, если не они опечатали дом чем-то непробиваемым, то кто еще? В каждой комнате из чуждого металла торчит по трубе. Бет не знает плакать, или смеяться: «Фарс какой-то. Там конец света, а мы капусту едим». Но стоп, есть ничего нельзя. Так говорит всемогущий экран. А потом требует «обеззаразить себя». «Разотрите всю кожу и одежду домашним отбеливателем». Так все и делают. После чего получают новое указание. Надо сделать прививку – вот и шприцы. Для всех это испытание проходит нормально. Кроме дедушки, который умирает, захлебываясь черной пеной. Старики слабее молодых. Бывает. Но что НА САМОМ ДЕЛЕ происходит? Зритель будут гадать бесконечно, до самого конца. Какое-то жуткое реалити-шоу, главными героями которого стала семья Милгрэм, социальный эксперимент? Реальное нападение террористов, атака – а может дело и вовсе в инопланетянах, как в «Кловерфилде»? Слабым звеном становится Энджайя, а ведь она единственная, кто могла бы помочь Кейт, и она единственная, кто – возможно, закаленная бесконечными стрессами на работе – сохраняет ясный ум и сознание. Фильм не назвать быстрым, это типичный “slowburner”. Все происходит только в доме или около него. Но при этом жанры меняются со скоростью света. То вам кажется, что это чистейший хоррор, то в дело идет триллер, то опять хоррор – но уже другой, совсем другой. Тем не менее, он не наскучивает. Регулярно бьет по тем болевым точкам, которым мы и так знаем – но их не знают люди вроде покойного деда. Излишнее доверие СМИ, вера в правительство. С одной стороны. С другой: абсолютная нетерпимость. Один и тот же человек может искренне верить в тот бред, что несется с экрана очередными мастерами пропаганды, и отталкивать от себя самых близких, самых родных людей, в одночасье делая из них врагов. Так ли уж важно, что на самом деле происходит за стенами дома? Куда важнее тот кошмар, который происходит ВНУТРИ. Сильное кино, для которого хоррор – лишь красивая маска, но финал при этом приведет в восторг всех поклонников Дэвида Кроненберга и Шинья Цукамото.
